"Ita Nia Mehi - Our Dreams" - 2024 Solo Exhibition
Updated: Feb 2, 2025
Following up on Ita Nia Ema – Our People (Toto's first solo exhibition in 2020), Ita Nia Mehi – Our Dreams invited viewers to dive into a new exploration of what it means to dream. In this exhibition, Toto wanted to shift focus from the past to the future, prompting us to reflect on the dreams that drive us forward and how they shape our vision of what’s to come.
Through his vivid and thought-provoking paintings, Toto gave us a glimpse into the dreams of the Timorese people—dreams that remain in the realm of possibility, not yet realized. These dreams weren’t just personal, but shared hopes for a community still striving to see those visions come to life. They were powerful, unfulfilled dreams, sitting at the edge of reality.
Each painting acted as a window into that space between fantasy and reality, a place where imagination can take flight, even if we haven’t yet figured out how to land. Ita Nia Mehi invited viewers to step across the boundary between what is and what could be—challenging us all to consider: What dreams are we holding onto? And what would it take to turn them into something tangible, something real?
As part of the exhibition, Toto also held an artist talk, where he walked through the significant pieces and shared his insights on the inspiration behind each work. This intimate conversation gave guests a deeper understanding of the themes at play and the journey that led to the creation of these captivating pieces.
