Timor-Leste Independence Day Exhibition in Thailand

I was invited by the Timor-Leste Ambassador to Thailand, to share my art at the 2024 Independence Day celebrations, which was such an honour.

Timor-Leste’s fight for independence is a powerful story—one of resilience, sacrifice, and hope. When I was invited to the celebration, I knew I wanted to bring art that reflected that strength and the beauty of the country’s culture. I wanted my art to speak to both the challenges the Timorese people have faced and the freedom they’ve fought so hard for - so that the guests, ranging from diplomats to members of the Timorese community living in Thailand, would understand the context of the celebration. It was a special event, bringing together people from different backgrounds, all united by the shared celebration of Timor-Leste’s independence.

I wanted my pieces to tell a story about Timor-Leste—not just its past, but also its vibrant culture and hopeful future. I drew on traditional Timorese symbols, colours, and patterns, mixing them with my own interpretation of the country’s landscape and spirit. It was a way to honour their history while looking forward to what’s ahead.
